Internships

The Colleges of Arts & Sciences, UH Manoa
Washington, D.C. Internships

Since 1998, the Colleges of Arts & Sciences of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa have sponsored undergraduate students in Washington, D.C. internships.  Beginning with only one student the first year, we now typically send three students annually to spend the fall semester at either The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars or The Smithsonian Institution.  Students remain enrolled at UH Manoa and put together programs with their major advisers that allow them to receive up to 12 academic credits while they intern in Washington, D.C.

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is dedicated to offering colleges students opportunities to experience first-hand the workings of our government while maintaining progress toward their degrees.  Their motto is "A Call to Public Service."  Students are placed at a wide variety of governmental organizations like the EPA and NIH, at not for profit advocacy groups like the NAACP and Amnesty International, at media and arts organizations like CNN and the Kennedy Center, etc.  Students live in dorms provided by The Washington Center, and attend weekly seminars, in addition to working 4 days a week as an intern and earning UH credit.

The Smithsonian Institution is the grand repository of our national history and culture.  Students are placed according to their interests in a wide variety of internships.  Recent students have worked in the Asia-Pacific collection, the Popular Culture collection, and the Medical Museum.  Students live in dorms provided by The Washington Center, and work full-time as interns, while earning UH credit.

The cost associated with these semester-long internships come to approximately $10,000 per student including roundtrip airfare, room and board in D.C., a monthly stipend, and a tuition waiver.

The internships are possible through the generous support of the following:

  • Hiram L. Fong Endowment in the Arts & Sciences
  • National Capital Region Chapter of the University of Hawaii Alumni Association
  • Francis & Sarah Sogi Endowment at the Smithsonian Institute
